To move forward, you must first take a step.
– Chase S.M. Neill
Something is wrong – but what?
You’re about ready to fall apart, but fear drives you to push through – or not.
Sometimes, you can’t get out of bed because it’s all too overwhelming. And sometimes, too many people rely on you to be “okay,” so failure is not an option.
No one around you sees it; no one hears you screaming in your head or sees the tears you cry when the weight of it all becomes too heavy.
Your thoughts keep you up at night, and your heart pounds; it feels like an elephant is sitting on your chest. At the same time, you’re so sad and lonely. You can’t help but wonder, “What’s wrong with me?”
Don’t avoid the signs!
Think about what happens when we ignore the signs of something serious. If you have chest pain and don’t go to the doctor to get it checked out, you risk a heart attack. When you fall and hurt your ankle and don’t have an x-ray taken, you could be walking around with a fracture, which can cause lifelong issues.
If you are depressed, anxious, or irritable, and angry much of the time, that’s a sign that something serious is going on. When you ignore the signs and don’t take care of your mental health, you run the risk of never enjoying the beauty of life.
Why is it so difficult to understand that the brain requires care, just like a visible injury?
We ‘see’ the effects of poor mental health every day through someone’s tears, anger, avoidance, and fear, among other visible emotions. If we do not take the time to acknowledge when we are hurt and take care of our’ injury,’ the natural consequences have a ripple effect throughout the many facets of our lives.
Step forward and seek help.
Taking the first step is always the toughest, but don’t let fear drive you away from deciding to start the healing process.
At your own pace, sharing your pain will give you the power you need to push through to the other side.
There’s no timeline for healing. Therapy is simply a layer of support you need to increase the strength you already have inside you.
Healthy thinking needs practice, and applying your new skills will create positive change. The cloud that followed you for so long will disappear, and relief will be your motivation to continue.
